Late Georgian Garnet Padlock Heart Locket (1780–1837)
ABOUT:
This extraordinary padlock locket hails from the late Georgian era, a time between 1780 and 1837 when jewelry was entirely handcrafted and rich with symbolism. Shaped as a heart, it speaks of love and devotion, while the working padlock adds a touch of romance & sentiment.
During this era, heart padlocks were often exchanged as tokens of love and fidelity. The padlock symbolized a heart kept safe, & the glass locket back allowed the wearer to carry a small keepsake, perhaps a lock of hair or a miniature portrait, close to their own heart.
The face glows with a central deep red garnet measuring 8.2mm, framed by three smaller garnets of approximately 3.5mm each. Surrounding the stones is delicate scrollwork, all engraved in warm 9–10K gold. The back holds a glass locket compartment, perfect for keeping a personal memory near.
