The Crown Jewel of My Collection – A Pair of Antique Romantic Period Earrings
ABOUT:
These exquisite earrings were a true discovery. The moment I laid eyes on them, I was captivated. Their beauty called to me, and I couldn’t resist the urge to bring them into my collection, with the hope of finding the perfect new owner who will appreciate their story and elegance.
The earrings feature delicate rosebuds framed by green enameled leaves, set against a stunning guilloché background. Guilloché is a technique that involves intricate patterns engraved into the metal, often resulting in a beautiful shimmering effect. Above the floral motif, the pendants are topped with a bow and a floral-patterned circle, both adorned with square and rectangular rubies, adding a rich touch of color and sophistication.
Versatile Day-to-Night Wear
These earrings offer a unique versatility – perfect for both daytime and evening wear. The bows and rosebuds can be removed, leaving behind elegant circle and clasp set with rubies, ideal for more casual, day-to-day elegance. When you’re ready to dress up for a night out, simply reattach the bow & floral rosebud pendants for a truly captivating look that transitions effortlessly from day to night.
Provenance
When I asked about the earrings' history, I was told they had belonged to an elderly woman in France. She had only a son, who was unmarried and unable to wear the earrings. As time passed, she decided to part with them, and it is my belief that they had been with her for decades, possibly passed down through her family. I feel incredibly fortunate to have acquired such a rare and personal piece, and now, I offer them to you, hoping they will find a new life and continue their journey.
These earrings come with their original fitted case, inscribed “Boutons de roses” in gold lettering. The case is crafted from brown morocco leather and features a dotted frieze and fern motifs, making it a true work of art in itself.
Historical Context – The Romantic Period
Circa 1830-1850, these earrings are a stunning example of jewelry from the Romantic Period, a time when emotions, individualism, and a deep reverence for nature influenced fashion. This era embraced flowing lines, nature-inspired motifs, and sentimental pieces, a departure from the rigid forms of earlier periods. Jewelry from this time often reflected the wearer’s personal emotions and connections, symbolizing love, longing, and beauty in nature.
Where Would Women Have Worn These Earrings?
Earrings like these were likely worn for special occasions, such as private gatherings, intimate dinners, or to accompany fine evening wear. The intricate craftsmanship and fine materials suggest that they would have been worn by women of high society at gatherings where elegance and distinction were paramount. Whether at a ball, a romantic rendezvous, or a gathering in the garden, these earrings would have been the perfect accessory to accentuate any ensemble.
MEASUREMENTS: 6 cm in height, 2.2 cm in width, 11.14 g in weight
CONDITION:
These earrings are in antique condition, with surface scratches consistent with their age and previous wear. One of the earrings has the green leaf stem of the rosebud broken off at the bottom (please see all pictures). This flaw is barely noticeable and does not detract from the overall beauty of the piece. The enamel work shows minor restorations, but these do not diminish the integrity of the earrings. The earrings are stamped with a shell hallmark and have been tested for 18K gold on the ear wires. They are sold in their original fitted case, which shows signs of age but remains in excellent condition. The total weight is 11.14 grams. Given their age (circa 1830-1850), these earrings have been lovingly preserved and remain a breathtaking example of Romantic Period craftsmanship.
All of the jewelry listed here is antique and pre-owned, meaning it may show signs of wear, which is a testament to its rich history and the stories it carries. Far from being “perfect” or “brand new,” this is what makes antique pieces so special – they’ve been loved, cherished, and worn over time. I believe that these imperfections only add to their character and charm, and they’re ready for their next chapter with you.
As with all antique jewelry, the stones may show subtle signs of wear, like surface abrasions or a natural patina, which only add to their unique character. Antique cuts and settings can differ from modern styles, contributing to their charm and individuality. Any significant imperfections or repairs will be clearly noted in the listings. Thank you for appreciating the beauty of their uniqueness!
Shipping insurance is required and INCLUDED in cost for any item over $200 to ensure your purchase is fully protected during transit.
